Retail is judged in the first ten seconds

An office can look tired without costing anything directly. A shop cannot. Customers form a view of a retail space almost immediately, and the things they read it from are consistent: the entrance glass, the floor inside the door, the smell, and the state of the fitting room or the counter.

Those are the areas a retail scope should weight most heavily, and they are usually the ones a generic commercial scope treats the same as everything else.

How retail cleaning is scheduled

Cleaning around trading hours

Retail cleaning happens before opening or after close, never during trade. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 9pm, which covers an early-morning clean before the doors open or an evening one after close.

Early morning tends to suit retail better than evening. A shop cleaned at 7am looks its best when the first customers arrive, rather than having sat overnight collecting dust with the lights off.

Shopping centre tenancies often have set delivery and access windows dictated by centre management. We work to those, and to whatever contractor sign-in the centre requires.

Floors take the punishment

Retail floors carry more traffic than almost any other commercial surface, and in Wellington they take a great deal of water walked in off the street. Vinyl and tile need a proper maintenance cycle rather than mopping alone, and entrance matting is the cheapest single improvement most shops can make, because the majority of soil in a retail space walks in through the front door.

Periodic floor care is quoted as its own line so you can see the cost and plan the cycle around your quiet trading periods.

What drives the cost

  • Trading hours and how often you need cleaning
  • Floor area and surface type
  • Amount of glass, frontage and internal display
  • Whether there are customer bathrooms and fitting rooms
  • Foot traffic, which varies enormously between a boutique and a supermarket-adjacent tenancy
  • Access windows set by centre management

Seasonal peaks and one-off retail work

Retail load is not even across the year. The weeks before Christmas, the sale periods and the school holidays put far more traffic through a shop than a quiet week in June, and a schedule set for the quiet weeks will not hold up through the busy ones.

The answer is usually not a larger permanent contract. It is a base schedule that suits normal trading, with agreed additional visits through the periods you already know are heavy. That way you are not paying peak frequency for twelve months to cover six weeks.

We also take retail work as one-off jobs, with no contract attached:

  • Pre-opening cleans, once the fitout is finished and before stock goes in
  • Seasonal deep cleans, usually booked into a quiet trading week
  • Post-event and post-promotion cleans

Changing cleaners without disrupting trade

Most retailers who call us already have a cleaner. The concern is rarely the price. It is the changeover: whether there will be a gap, whether the new team will know the store, and whether any of it will be visible to customers.

The new schedule starts the day after the old one ends, the first few cleans are attended by the supervisor who scoped the site, and the scope is written down before anything begins so there is no argument later about what was included.

Where the people currently cleaning your store move across to us, we manage that transfer properly. We have taken on team members from outgoing contractors many times, and someone who already knows your store is usually worth keeping.

One practical note: if you are in a contract, check the notice period before you ask anyone for a quote. It is the most common reason a changeover ends up messier than it needed to be.

Areas we cover

Wellington CBD, Te Aro, Thorndon, Newtown, Kilbirnie and Miramar, north through Johnsonville, Tawa and Porirua, east across Petone, Seaview, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, and up the coast to Paraparaumu, Raumati, Waikanae and Ōtaki. Shopping centre tenancies and standalone stores both, and several stores can run under one contract. Explore areas we cover.

Retailers with stores on both sides of that spread often find one contractor easier than two. One scope, one invoice and one supervisor accountable for every site is considerably easier to manage than a separate arrangement in each town, and it is the part most cleaning companies covering only the city cannot offer.
